On Wednesday Politico argued President Trump is “pushing the legal boundaries of a government shutdown, fueling fears that the president is manipulating federal agencies and workers to soften the political blow against him.”
The recent callbacks focused on immigration enforcement officials, IRS workers, and food and aviation inspectors. The EPA also called back employees to help acting head Andrew Wheeler prepare for upcoming Senate confirmation hearings.
“Longtime federal workers and legal experts say the Trump administration is playing fast-and-loose with well-established rules as it continues to pursue its agenda while trying to inoculate itself from public gripes by maintaining services for consumers,” Politico wrote.
On Tuesday a federal judge denied an initial motion in a lawsuit from federal workers arguing the Trump administration could not force workers to work without pay.
